In an effort to raise awareness among contracting companies, consulting offices, real estate developers, and construction site workers about the importance of adhering to the highest safety standards, Abu Dhabi City Municipality, through its Environment, Health, and Safety Department, launched an inspection campaign targeting tower cranes at new construction sites across Abu Dhabi. The campaign aimed to ensure compliance with environment, health, and safety standards for tower cranes.
During the five-day field campaign, the municipality’s teams emphasized the importance of adhering to all requirements of the Environment, Health, and Safety Management System for tower cranes. They also underscored the necessity of following the laws and regulations in effect within the emirate and conducting mandatory third-party audits to verify the safety of tower cranes.
The municipality stressed that implementing these standards is mandatory due to their significant positive impact on the safety of workers at construction sites and within buildings. Contractors and consultants at new construction sites, both on and off Abu Dhabi Island, were reminded of the importance of complying with these standards to safeguard workers and the community. Violations of environment, health, and safety requirements were identified, and penalties were issued to non-compliant companies.
As part of these efforts, Abu Dhabi City Municipality also organize a virtual workshop for the targeted groups. The workshop highlighted the need to establish a safe working environment within the construction sector, eliminate crane-related accidents entirely, and enhance compliance with tower crane safety standards among companies in the industry.
Speakers at the workshop outlined several key requirements for tower cranes, including ensuring that cranes or their components do not extend beyond plot boundaries, obtaining third-party technical inspection certificates, performing regular maintenance through specialized companies, and equipping cranes with proper lighting.
The municipality affirmed that such campaigns and workshops will continue throughout the year, aiming to mitigate risks at construction sites and enforce the provision of optimal safety measures for tower cranes to reduce accidents and protect workers. It also seeks to enhance self-regulation among site managers and foster collaboration with the municipality to ensure a safe work environment that complies with applicable regulations and standards in the UAE.
