In line with sustainability standards and the ongoing urban transformation in Abu Dhabi, the Abu Dhabi City Municipality, through the Infrastructure and Municipal Assets Sector, has completed beautification works on the central island on Sheikh Zayed Road. The project extends over a distance of 13.2 kilometres between Sheikh Zayed Bridge and Zayed International Airport.
The landscaping works included enhancing the median and roadsides by planting thousands of trees, shrubs, and seasonal flowers to expand green spaces, improve the environment, and reduce pollution and noise from the highway. Additionally, artificial landscaping features such as 1.5-meter-high stabilized sand dunes were introduced to complement the area’s overall aesthetic appeal.
The landscaping design drew inspiration from the sleek and flowing lines of Zayed International Airport’s architecture, creating a harmonious visual alignment between the roadway and one of Abu Dhabi's main entry points. The project incorporated signature landscaping elements that reflect the sophistication and elegance of Abu Dhabi, ensuring a cohesive and unique aesthetic identity for the area.
The integration of diverse natural elements showcased the rich agricultural diversity of the UAE, featuring flowering plants and trees of various sizes and colors. This approach enhanced the area’s beauty and provided a visually uplifting experience for road users, adding positive energy and joy through scenic vistas along the modern road leading to Zayed International Airport.
