What is ‘For Abu Dhabi’?

‘For Abu Dhabi’ is a community initiative led by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), and forms part of the Ghadan 21 Government Accelerator Programme. ‘For Abu Dhabi’ aims to enhance the Emirate’s urban spaces and nature sites to improve the quality of life for all residents and visitors.

Each project will be highly visual and interactive, ensuring communities can benefit from vibrant, healthy and sustainable places, in which they can explore, interact and relax.

‘For Abu Dhabi’ will focus on key areas, which include supporting environmental sustainability, implementing smart technologies and encouraging healthier lifestyle choices. These enhancements will occur through the development of existing and newly created spaces.

Why was ‘For Abu Dhabi’ created?

DMT was mandated to make Abu Dhabi one of the most liveable cities in the world, as part of the Government Accelerator Programme, Ghadan 21. Subsequently, ‘For Abu Dhabi’ was initiated to enhance the Emirate’s urban environment and outdoor spaces.

‘For Abu Dhabi’ have rolled out its small and large-scale projects since December 2019, and will continue to do so until 2021, across the entire Emirate.

What is the Department of Municipalities and Transport?

It is the entity responsible for supporting growth and urban development in Abu Dhabi Emirate, through guiding, regulating and monitoring all urban development activities. It also works extensively to provide comprehensive public services and create higher standards of living for residents, through the supervision and management of the municipalities.

Known as the DMT, the entity also ensures the highest standards of safety, security, sustainability and technological developments for the Emirate's land, air and maritime transport networks, in line with the highest international standards and UAE legislation.

What is Ghadan 21’s ‘Investing in People’

Ghadan 21, which means Tomorrow 21 in English, aims to transform the Emirate’s economy by supporting the wellbeing of its people.

From developing education, to social support and incubator programmes, Abu Dhabi champions inclusive communities and equips its people with skills and opportunities for the future.

Named the most liveable city in the Middle East and North Africa region, in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s global survey, Abu Dhabi continues to make strides in improving its infrastructure, healthcare, education, culture and environment. New parks and cycle paths are being created, transport links are being enhanced, and access to nature sites increased.

What kind of projects will ‘For Abu Dhabi’ deliver?

New projects include artistic pedestrian crossings, contemporary artworks in public spaces, attractive school perimeters, new parks, pedestrian and cycle path enhancements, the evolution of multi-use recreation spots, public resting areas in key locations and sports facilities for community members in densely populated areas.

When will projects begin to appear across Abu Dhabi?

Projects have been delivered since December 2019 across the island of Abu Dhabi. Residents can expect to see more projects being launched throughout 2020 and 2021.

What is ‘For Exploring’, ‘For Interacting’ and ‘For Relaxing’?

These are three core themes at the heart of every ‘For Abu Dhabi’ project.

For Exploring: Captures the vibrancy, artistry and imagination of Abu Dhabi. These projects will add colour and creativity to the Emirate through artistic road-crossings, visual enhancements in school zones, as well as aesthetically pleasing pedestrian walkways and cycle paths that will encourage people to leave their cars at home and walk and cycle around the Emirate.

For Interacting: Encourages community members to be active with modern recreation facilities. Children and adults can take advantage of new play and sports areas in urban spaces, including multi-use and recreational car parks. These innovative open spaces will create a vibrant and attractive atmosphere, encouraging outdoor activity and promoting active and healthy lifestyles.

For Relaxing: Delivers diverse settings where members of the community can engage with one another and enjoy the natural environment. Shaded rest areas and welcoming public spaces will provide places where people can take a break from their day-to-day activities.

Which regions of Abu Dhabi will ‘For Abu Dhabi’ impact?
